Circa 1986, the brooch in the form of a face with a mask, the face assembled from ivory and ebony and set to the eyes with opals, the metal mask set with seed pearls and carved walrus ivory faces, completed with a locking pin stem, signed and dated.

David Hensel is an internationally recognized artist known for unique sculptural jewelry, with exhibitions dating to 1978 and works held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, and the Arts Council; his practice also includes a larger sculpture shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
