Herbert Clayton Desvignes was a British painter based in London. He worked during the height of Victorian interest in rural life and pastoral imagery. Although little is known about his personal life, his professional career is documented through exhibition records and surviving works.

Desvignes was best known for detailed landscapes and animal paintings, particularly scenes featuring cattle, sheep, and horses. He exhibited regularly at major institutions including the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists.

The canvas has been lined, with restoration and retouching visible under UV light; the frame with abrasions and loss.
