Víctor Chab was an Argentine painter whose long career was marked by continual experimentation and a deep engagement with surrealism, abstraction, and figuration. Born in Buenos Aires, Chab recognized his vocation for art at an early age. Largely self-taught, he refined his practice through workshops and the influential MEEBA free atelier.
In the early 1950s, Chab immersed himself in surrealist thought, teaching himself French to read André Breton and embracing automatism through ink, collage, and found poetry. Over subsequent decades, his work evolved through free and geometric abstraction, and gestural painting. He participated in major international exhibitions, including the 1956 Venice Biennale, and was instrumental in forming influential artist groups that bridged surrealism and lyrical abstraction.
