Ed Shewmake was an American painter, printmaker, and sculptor based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was born in Davidson, North Carolina and graduated from Davidson College. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he studied at the Corcoran School of Art and the Art Students League in Woodstock, New York, and earned an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1953, he became head of the Art Department at Salem College, where he taught for over forty years.

Shewmake played a significant role in shaping Winston-Salem’s arts community, helping to establish organizations such as Associated Artists and Artworks Gallery, and contributing to the development of the city’s Arts District. He exhibited widely, was a member of the Tri-State Sculptors Association, and was named Artist of the Year by the Sawtooth Center in 2001.
