Private Collection, Pinehurst, North Carolina Steven Silverleaf grew up between New York City, Athens, Greece, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He studied painting and drawing at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee in the 1970s and was active in the city’s art, poetry, and experimental theatre communities. He returned to North Carolina in 1980, eventually settling in the Triangle area in 1990, where he opened a visual arts gallery that highlighted under recognized artist communities and fostered cross disciplinary collaborations.
An active participant in dance, experimental theatre, poetry, and pop up installation scenes, Silverleaf has worked extensively as a curator and arts consultant. Since 2004, he has divided his time between his Carrboro, North Carolina studio and international art centers, including Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood and Sapporo, Japan. His work and collaborations continue to reflect an international perspective and a commitment to interdisciplinary practice.
