Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Pittsboro, North Carolina, brushed stainless steel, fabricated and welded in rising helix form, the base faintly stamped "G W L 2000 / 04."

56 x 18 x 18 in.

Chatham County based artist, Gretchen Lothrop, is a painter and photographer, as well as a sculptor. She has participated in over 50 group exhibitions and has had 21 solo exhibitions. Lothrop works predominately, but not exclusively, with stainless steel, and her imagery is often based on music or dance: "My process is additive, using predominately, but not exclusively, stainless steel. My imagery is often based on music or its corollary - dance, and the paradox of time. I think of my work as haiku - the crystallization of an instant of insight which might otherwise be swept away."
She has completed several public and private commissioned works including a work titled "In Other Words Fly" commissioned by the Caldwell Arts Council for Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir, North Carolina; a large work titled "Jubilaeus" commemorating the Olympic Torch in Columbia at the Bank of America Plaza, in Columbia, South Carolina; as well as several works for the Newman Catholic Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, including a magnificent sculptural candelabra/lectern/Tree of Life and two Holy Water fonts; among others.
