From the Collection of a Gentleman, St. Petersburg, Florida Norman Carton was a Ukrainian-born American painter and educator associated with mid-20th-century Abstract Expressionism. After immigrating to the United States in 1922, he trained in Philadelphia and worked as an illustrator and muralist for the WPA before developing a vibrant abstract style marked by bold color and expressive gesture.
Carton exhibited widely in the United States and Europe beginning in the late 1940s and was active as a teacher, designer, and organizer within the art community. His work is represented in major museum collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art.
