Jacques François Joseph Carabain was a Dutch-born Belgian painter renowned for his detailed cityscapes and urban views. Trained in Amsterdam, he specialized in Romantic-Realist depictions of streets, squares, and architectural landmarks across Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, and Austria, capturing both historic sites and everyday life. During his time in Italy, he painted vibrant scenes of cities such as Venice, Rome, and Florence, blending precise architectural detail with lively depictions of local urban life. Settling in Schaerbeek near Brussels, he documented historic city scenes, including commissioned watercolors of Brussels before redevelopment, and exhibited widely in Europe and abroad, including Australia and New Zealand.

Areas of retouch in top third of painting visible under UV light; minor rubbing to frame.
