Valdis Bušs was a seminal Latvian painter whose work placed him among the most distinctive landscape artists of 20th‑century Latvian art. Born in Latgale near Viļaka, he demonstrated artistic talent early and began formal studies at the Latvian Academy of Art in 1945, though he did not complete his diploma after choosing to accompany his fiancée to Siberia in 1949. After returning to Latvia in 1955, Bušs established his life and career in Jūrmala, where he became an active member and later leader of the Jūrmala Artists Group and a member of the Artists’ Union of Latvia.
