Elaine Day Dowdell grew up in the Catskill Mountains, where her father was a West Point Military Academy instructor. After attending college and completing a Master’s Degree, she focused on a career as a journalist and later worked for the State Department as a public information officer.
She began painting in the 1960s and exhibited for the first time in Winston Salem, North Carolina in 1974, where she would reside for the rest of her life. She taught painting at the Winston-Salem Arts and Crafts Association, later renamed the Sawtooth School, and was a board member of the Artist Emeritus of Associated Arts.
