John Downman was an English portrait painter and draughtsman known for his accurate and expressive likenesses. In 1768 he became a student of Benjamin West and the following year entered the Royal Academy Schools. His early work, often small oil on copper portraits such as the present example, has been compared to that of Francis Wheatley. Downman’s skill earned him widespread recognition, and he received commissions from prominent figures, including the Duchess of Devonshire and the actress Sarah Siddons. His portraits are held in major collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Yale Center for British Art, and the British Museum, among others.
Masking varnish visible under UV light; rubbing along perimeter of copper plaque from framing.
