Herb Jackson is an American abstract painter and educator widely regarded as one of North Carolina’s leading contemporary artists. He earned a B.A. from Davidson College in 1967 and an M.F.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970, after studying for a year at Philipps University in Germany. Jackson joined the faculty at Davidson College in 1969 and taught there for over four decades, serving as chair of the art department and helping expand its art program before retiring as Professor of Art Emeritus in 2011. His work, almost entirely nonrepresentational and built up through many layers of paint, has been shown in more than 150 solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad and is included in over 100 public collections, including the British Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 1999 he received the North Carolina Award, the state’s highest civilian honor, and in 2015 the North Caroliniana Society Award for his contributions to the state’s cultural heritage.
