James Edwin Meadows was a British landscape and marine painter born in Mountnessing, Essex, into a talented artistic family; his father, James Meadows Senior, was a noted marine artist, and several of his brothers were also painters or sculptors. Meadows became known for his serene depictions of rural English countryside scenes and coastal views, capturing calm light, natural detail, and figures within pastoral settings.

Based in London for much of his career, he exhibited widely at prestigious venues including the Royal Academy, from 1854 to 1872, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists, among others.
