James Hamilton was a marine painter associated with the American Romantic movement and the Hudson River School tradition. Born in Ireland, Hamilton immigrated to the United States as a child and settled in Philadelphia, where he spent much of his career. He developed a distinctive style influenced by British marine painter J.M.W. Turner, whose dramatic treatment of light and atmosphere deeply informed Hamilton’s work.

Hamilton is best known for his storm-tossed seascapes, coastal views, and maritime scenes, often characterized by turbulent waves, luminous skies, and expressive brushwork. He also painted scenes related to the American Civil War and historical maritime subjects.

He exhibited at major institutions including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design in New York. Today, his works are held in prominent museum collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and other major American institutions, and he is regarded as one of the most important 19th-century American marine painters.
