Samuel S. Carr was a painter of genre and pastoral subjects, particularly known for depictions of children, seashore life, and rural landscapes. Born in England in 1837, he immigrated to the United States around 1862. In 1865, he attended a mechanical drawing class at Cooper Union in New York City. Carr later settled in Brooklyn, where he lived from approximately 1879 to 1907. He remained a bachelor throughout his life and was active in the local art community, serving at one time as President of the Brooklyn Art Club.

Carr’s work reflects the popular tastes of the late 19th century. His pastoral scenes often feature cattle, sheep, or goats set within tranquil landscapes that suggest different times of day or seasons. He shared a studio with painter Clinton Loveridge, and the two artists supported themselves through the production of these peaceful rural scenes.

Good estate condition, slight age cracking.
