David Johnson was a second-generation Hudson River School painter associated with the Luminist movement. Born in New York City, he studied briefly with landscape painter Jasper Francis Cropsey and was influenced by the detailed naturalism and quiet clarity that characterized mid-19th-century American landscape painting. Johnson became known for his meticulously rendered views of New York State, the Catskills, Lake George, and the Hudson River Valley, often marked by the controlled light effects, stillness, and clarity typical of Luminism.
Johnson exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design, where he was elected an Associate in 1859 and a full Academician in 1861. He was also active with the Brooklyn Art Association and other regional institutions. His work is held in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Very good condition.
