Private Collection, Raleigh, North Carolina Prospère Pierre-Louis was a Haitian painter and a leading figure of the Saint Soleil art movement, known for his vibrant, spiritual depictions of Vodou spirits and mystical figures. Born in Bainet near Jacmel, Haiti, he had little formal education and was exposed to Vodou traditions early in life through his father, a houngan (Vodou priest). As a teenager he moved to Port-au-Prince, where he eventually joined the Saint Soleil artistic community organized by Maud Robard and Jean-Claude “Tiga” Garoute, becoming one of its most prominent painters. After the group dissolved, he continued working with several members in the collective Cinq Soleils, further developing his distinctive, highly expressive style.
