Eddy Mumma, often called “Mr. Eddy,” was an American folk artist known for his expressive, vividly colored portrait paintings. Born in Milton, Ohio, Mumma worked various jobs for much of his life before beginning to paint in his late 50s after moving to Gainesville, Florida. Largely self-taught and working in isolation, often while confined to a wheelchair, he produced hundreds of paintings on found materials and boards, frequently depicting stylized figures with large eyes, rounded faces, and exaggerated hands. Mumma rarely exhibited or sold his work during his lifetime, instead keeping the paintings in his home. After his death, his body of work gained recognition within the field of American folk and outsider art, and examples are now held in museum and private collections.
