Private Collection, Raleigh, North Carolina Derek Toomes is an artist based in Greensboro and Raleigh, NC, and an Assistant Professor of Interior Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His work draws on the iconic imagery of popular culture, using sourcing and appropriation to create pieces that are both aesthetically and anthropologically grounded while critically reflecting the image saturated nature of contemporary society. Working across images, video, kinetic objects, and installations, his practice is self aware and art aware, offering what he describes as contemporary atavistic viewing experiences. Influenced by time spent in Los Angeles, his work incorporates elements of Latino art, blending rich textures, vibrant colors, and ornamental hand drawn lettering with grittier, urban techniques. He works in a range of media, from aerosol, marker, wheat paste, and acrylic on canvas to large scale installations integrating video and robotics, and has exhibited at institutions including the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, while also participating in collaborative projects across North America.
