Mária Szánthó was a Hungarian painter born in Szeged who first trained as a pianist at the Hungarian Music Academy before turning to painting. Influenced by artists such as Károly Lotz and Gyula Benczúr, she developed a highly detailed, romantic style known for portraits, still lifes, and idealized female figures often set within musical or pastoral scenes. Szantho exhibited widely in Hungary beginning in the 1920s and represented the country at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Her work gained international recognition, particularly in the United States and Japan.
