Eliot Candee Clark was born in New York in 1883, the son of tonalist painter Walter Clark. His artistic talent emerged early, and by the age of thirteen he was already exhibiting at both the New York Water Color Club and the National Academy of Design.

Although Clark traveled extensively throughout Europe, he ultimately chose not to settle in New York. In 1932, he relocated to Albemarle County, Virginia, where he became closely associated with the region’s artistic community. An influential American Impressionist, Clark was celebrated for landscapes imbued with the quiet spirituality of his study of Eastern philosophy.

Over the course of his career, Clark exhibited widely and earned recognition not only as a painter, but also as a gifted teacher. He taught at the National Arts Club, the Art Students League of New York, and New York City College, inspiring generations of young artists.

Minor scattered chipping to frame; small surface abrasions with associated paint loss in lower right corner.
