Charles Chapin was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, to Chester Fisher Chapin and Janet Lynn Richardson. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later returned for graduate studies. He continued his artistic training in New York, studying at both the Art Students League and the New School, where he further developed his practice.

Chapin eventually settled in Apalachicola, Florida, where he lived along the river and became an active presence in the local arts community. Deeply engaged with environmental preservation and women’s causes, his life and work reflected a strong commitment to both place and social advocacy. He frequently exhibited alongside his son, Samuel, a sculptor, including at Gallery 75 in Apalachicola.
