18th or 19th century, silver gilt bronze or copper alloy with gilt highlights, the arched shaped box is finely chased with repoussé of Buddhist treasure motifs over a floriate ground, beaded borders, the open window displays a small seated Buddhist deity with a carved inscription to the right side of the body, the interior houses nine Buddhist thangka religious paintings, some with newer backing, a silk prayer scarf is also included inside, handles flank each side of the outer box, an old woven cord and fabric tie remains attached to the handles.

Gau boxes were traditionally worn around the neck or carried while traveling, designed to house small votive Buddhist statues (
tsa-tsa), holy relics, blessed medicinal herbs, thangkas and prayers on parchment.
The box has a lovely green patina; wear with a loss to the top of the
tsa tsa votive figure; the prayer scarf, cords, and fabric all with wear and dirt; the paintings are in various conditions from age and use, please refer to the photos to review their condition.
