Stretcher size 25 1/4 x 30 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 35 1/2 x 40 1/2 in.

Maurice Askenazy was born in Odessa, Russia, in 1888 and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of four, growing up in New York City. Recognized for his artistic talent early in life, he studied at the National Academy of Design before continuing his training in France and Italy. In 1916, Askenazy exhibited a painting of a Venetian Girl at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1928, he settled in Los Angeles, where he established a successful career as a portrait painter known for his refined technique and cosmopolitan style.
