August Lohr was an Austrian-born landscape and panorama painter whose career spanned Europe, the United States, and Mexico. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Carl Theodor von Piloty, Lohr became known for his large-scale panoramic works before settling in Mexico around 1890, where he spent nearly three decades painting dramatic landscapes and scenes of Mexican life. His work is celebrated for its luminous detail, sweeping compositions, and evocative portrayals of the Mexican countryside and volcanoes.
