Private Collection, Roanoke, Virginia William Collingwood Smith was a British watercolor painter known for marine scenes, landscapes, and views of rivers and cities. Largely self-taught, he became a prominent member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other major institutions. He traveled widely throughout Britain and Europe, producing more than 1,000 works, many of which were reproduced in the
Illustrated London News. In addition to painting, he ran a large art school in London and taught both amateur and professional artists.
