Private Collection, Roanoke, Virginia Walter Granville-Smith was a painter, illustrator, and watercolorist best known for his Impressionist landscapes, coastal scenes, and marine subjects. Born in South Granville, New York, and raised in Newark, New Jersey, he studied at the Art Students League of New York and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. He first gained recognition as a magazine illustrator for leading publications such as Harper’s, Scribner’s, Century, and Collier’s, becoming one of the most accomplished illustrators of his generation before turning his focus increasingly to fine art.
Granville-Smith became particularly celebrated for his luminous depictions of the beaches, marshes, and waterways of Long Island, especially around Bellport and Fire Island. A prominent figure in the New York art community, he was elected a full Academician of the National Academy of Design and served as president of the Salmagundi Club.
