Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, Two Framed Works Offering Views of Spanish Cities

Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Views of four different Andalusian cities in two framed works, to include: Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg. SEVILLA / CADIZ / MALAGA [and] ANTEQUERA. Cologne, 1572/1575 or later. The first offering three engraved views of cities in Andalusia on one sheet, including Seville, Cádiz, and Málaga, each view with a corner cartouche with text in Latin (Plate size 13 3/8 x 18 3/4 in.; Frame dimensions 22 1/2 x 27 1/2 in.); the second a view of Antequera in Andalusia in the province of Málaga, showing its impressive mountainous landscape, and with simple title cartouche and corner cartouche with text in Latin that tells us, in part, about the city's salt, stone quarries, and pottery (Sheet size 14 3/8 x 20 in.; Frame dimensions 21 7/8 x 27 3/8 in.); both from Braun & Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum and presented matted and framed.

From a Private Williamsburg, Virginia Collection

Sheet with three views in one with subtle damp staining along centerfold, a couple of minor spots (holes?) in top view, the middle view with an area likely repaired and retouched and what appears to be a later ink line, a small spot of residue in bottom view, and minor stains in lower margin. View of Antequera with scattered light foxing, minor grime, and a subtle repaired tear and central vertical crease; the lower margin appears to be cleanly cut at border and reattached, with light wear, a small repair, a pencil notation, and border retouched with ink. Both good examples, with centerfold, as issued, and minor to light wear to frame; not examined outside the frames.
