Private Collection, Roanoke, Virginia Philip Hermogenes Calderon was born in France to a Spanish father and French mother and moved to London as a child. Originally trained as a civil engineer, he chose art instead, studying in London and Paris before establishing himself as a successful painter. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853 and became known for narrative paintings such as
Broken Vows, which illustrated influence from the Pre-Raphaelites. Calderon was a leading member of the St. John’s Wood Clique and received major honors in Britain and abroad, including election to the Royal Academy and the Legion of Honour in France. In 1887 he was appointed Keeper of the Royal Academy, where he oversaw the Academy Schools and administrative affairs.
The work has been lined, with clear varnish and light age cracking, some professional areas of repair and retouching, only visible under UV light inspection.
