Private Collection, Roanoke, Virginia Milne Ramsey studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and maintained a small studio in Philadelphia after the Civil War. In 1868 he moved to Paris to study under Léon Bonnat, remaining there for a decade and becoming one of the founders of the Society of American Artists in Paris. During this period, he developed a strong interest in still life painting while also producing numerous plein air landscape studies inspired by his travels. Ramsey continued traveling between France and the United States throughout his career, earning widespread recognition and numerous awards for his work during his lifetime. His still life paintings may be found in many museum collections, including the Detroit Institute of Fine Arts, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art.
