Anthony Alonso was an American painter known for his portraits of thoroughbred horses and figures associated with the racing industry. Born in New York City, he studied at the High School of Music and Art and Pratt Institute, and worked primarily in oil. Introduced to thoroughbred racing by Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens, Alonso spent more than 35 years painting many of the sport’s leading horses. His style, often described as romantic realist, is characterized by muted colors and a focus on early morning training scenes at tracks such as Saratoga and Belmont Park.
Alonso was selected as the official artist for a Breeders’ Cup event poster at Santa Anita and was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Equine Artists. For over 30 years, he held an annual exhibition at The Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Spa State Park to coincide with the summer racing season. His work is held in permanent collections at major racing institutions, including The Jockey Club, Churchill Downs, and Belmont Park.
