Larry Dodd Wheeler is an American equine and sporting artist based in Georgia. Born near Atlanta, he studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and began his career as a painting conservator, working at institutions including the Smithsonian and the Corcoran Gallery before focusing on painting full time. His background in conservation informs his technical approach and attention to detail. He counts John Singer Sargent, Thomas Eakins and Sir Alfred Munnings as important influences.
Wheeler’s work centers on horse racing, field sports, and related landscapes, often drawn from the American South. He is known for straightforward compositions that emphasize setting and atmosphere, and his paintings have been exhibited and collected through galleries specializing in sporting art. Most recently, he has exhibited at the Keeneland Spring Meet in 2026, as well as the Breeders’ Cup, Upperville Colt & Horse Show, and Ocala in 2025.
