Joseph Cave is an American painter known for his oil paintings of floral still lifes and naturalistic landscapes. Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, he studied painting at the University of Georgia from 1954 to 1958. After two years of service in the United States Army, primarily in Germany, he enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1962. He continued his studies at San Francisco State College, where he received a Master of Fine Arts in 1964 with concentrations in painting and printmaking, and met his wife, Jessica.
Cave taught drawing, painting, and design at several institutions, including the Memphis Academy of Art, Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College), the San Francisco Art Institute, and Crystal Springs Uplands School, where he served as head of the art department from 1967 to 1971. He later held part-time teaching positions at the Mendocino Art Center and Mendocino Community College. He lived and worked in California for many years, painting landscapes of the wine country and coast, and spent five years in Portugal focusing on rural subjects. In 1989, he returned to the United States and eventually settled in North Carolina after a period along the South Carolina coast.
