Born Susannah Margaretta Makeig-Jones, "Daisy" was one of the great British female designers of the early 20th century, a period which saw the birth of the women’s liberation movement. Working at Wedgwood at the beginning of the 20th century, Daisy Makeig-Jones is perhaps best known for her Fairyland Lustre wares, lavishly-decorated pieces which depicted fantastical scenes of her own imagination.
Daisy attended school at the Torquay School of Art located in the seaside town in Devon, England. She began her apprenticeship at Wedgwood through her family's connection with Cecil Wedgwood in 1909 and advanced quickly within the factory to become a staff designer in 1911. Her 'Ordinary Lustre' line debuted in 1914 and featured gilded whimsical designs atop brightly lustred glazes. This was quicky followed by her popular 'Fairyland Lustre' line in 1915, which featured mythical and sometimes strange creatures on intensely rainbowed surfaces and became bestsellers at Wedgwood during the Roaring Twenties. Due to economic pressures during the Great Depression, tastes shifted and thus Wedgwood would end the line.
Some minor areas of rubbing to the decoration; small area of luster loss underneath the rim, overall good estate condition.
