Hubert Sattler was an Austrian painter renowned for his highly detailed landscape and city views, particularly his large-scale “cosmorama” paintings depicting sites across Europe, the Near East, and the Americas. Born in Salzburg into a family of artists, he trained initially with his father, the panorama painter Johann Michael Sattler, and later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He used several pseudonyms over the course of his career, including Louis Ritschard, E. Grossen, and Gottfried Stähly-Rychen.
Sattler traveled extensively in pursuit of accurate visual documentation, producing meticulously observed works that were exhibited internationally, often in specially constructed viewing environments that enhanced their realism. Celebrated in his lifetime for both artistic skill and topographical precision, he was awarded the title of Professor in 1848.
