Three North Carolina Studio Raku Fired Vases

Turned and raku fired ceramic, all signed to the underside, the first two ovoid vases turned and decorated by Harry Hearnes, including one in turquoise with green shift glaze (5 1/4 x 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.), and the second in the artist's "dolphin blue" proprietary glaze (6 3/4 x 8 x 8 in.); the tallest by potter duo Charlie and Linda Riggs, of Riggs Pottery & Clay Art Studio, featuring white and colored craze splash glaze on a monochrome ground (7 1/2 x 8 x 8 in.).

In 1985, Harry Hearne started making pots at the Torpedo Factory in Olde Town Alexandria, VA and was so taken with clay that a few years later he moved to Murfreesboro, TN for a two-year studio internship. In 1990, he established Turning Point Clay Studio where he makes his living selling pots and teaching classes. For five summers, Harry taught at the Tennessee Governor's School for the Arts. He also teaches workshops at Arrowmont School of Crafts, John C. Campbell Folk School, Appalachia Center for Crafts and various other schools and universities. He lives in Brasstown, NC where he enjoys a diverse craft community and a peaceful mountain home.

Linda has Masters in Anthropology. She collaborates with Charlie to create some of the unique surfaces on their pottery including saggar-firing, naked raku, and carvings and slip designs. Linda has written a number of articles on pottery for Ceramics Monthly and Clay Times. She is also featured in magazine articles on saggar firing, and in the books by Watkins/Wandless and Steven Branfman. She co-teaches workshops with her husband Charlie.
