George Glenn Newell was an American painter known for his pastoral landscapes and cattle scenes. Born in Michigan, he studied at the National Academy of Design under Edgar Melville Ward after attending Albion College and Columbia University, and later trained at Teacher’s College in New York. A respected figure in American art, Newell became a National Academician in 1937, served as president of Allied Artists of America, and exhibited regularly at the National Academy between 1901 and 1944.

Newell's work evolved toward a broader, more vigorous style marked by strong sunlight, rich color, and thickly applied paint. In addition to his easel paintings, Newell completed several WPA mural commissions for post offices including one at the post office in Wallace, North Carolina in 1941.
