From a Private Collection Joseph McGurl is an American landscape painter known for his plein air paintings of coastal and natural scenes. Designated a Living Master by the Art Renewal Center, he is a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America and an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists. His work has been widely exhibited and is held in museum and private collections throughout the United States.
McGurl studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and continued his training in England, Italy, and under painter Robert Cormier, where he focused on traditional drawing methods. Early in his career, he worked as a yacht captain along the East Coast and Caribbean, experiences that strongly influenced his connection to landscape and marine subjects. Working directly from observation rather than photography, McGurl emphasizes light, atmosphere, structure, and color in his paintings.
Good estate condition; no evidence of retouch visible under UV light.
