Chatham County based artist, Gretchen Lothrop, is a painter and photographer, as well as a sculptor. She has participated in over 50 group exhibitions and has had 21 solo exhibitions. Lothrop works predominately with stainless steel, and her imagery is often based on music or dance: "My process is additive, using predominately, but not exclusively, stainless steel. My imagery is often based on music or its corollary - dance, and the paradox of time. I think of my work as haiku - the crystallization of an instant of insight which might otherwise be swept away."
She has completed several public and private commissioned works including a work titled "In Other Words Fly" commissioned by the Caldwell Arts Council for Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir, North Carolina; a large work titled "Jubilaeus" commemorating the Olympic Torch in Columbia at the Bank of America Plaza, in Columbia, South Carolina; as well as several works for the Newman Catholic Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, including a magnificent sculptural candelabra/lectern/Tree of Life and two Holy Water fonts; among others.
