Juliet Kepes was a British-born illustrator, painter, sculptor, and author best known for her innovative children's books. After studying at the Brighton School of Art, she moved to the United States in 1937 to attend the New Bauhaus in Chicago, where her husband, artist and designer György Kepes, taught. Beginning in the early 1950s, she wrote and illustrated a series of acclaimed children's books distinguished by their expressive brushwork and sophisticated design, earning a Caldecott Honor for Five Little Monkeys (1952) and multiple citations from the New York Times and the Society of Illustrators. In addition to her publishing career, Kepes collaborated on public art projects with her husband and exhibited her paintings and drawings at institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Worcester Art Museum.
