Billy Morrow Jackson was an American painter, printmaker, muralist, and educator best known for his distinctive style of "representational surrealism," which blended meticulous realism with subtle dreamlike elements. After studying at Washington University in St. Louis and earning an MFA from the University of Illinois, he joined the university's faculty, where he taught for more than three decades while developing a celebrated body of work inspired by the landscapes, cityscapes, and everyday life of the Midwest. Deeply committed to social justice, Jackson also produced influential Civil Rights prints and public murals that reflected his lifelong engagement with political and humanitarian issues. His work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and numerous other public institutions.
