Charles Damrow was an American painter best known for his evocative depictions of the American West, specializing in scenes of cowboys, Native Americans, buffalo, and dramatic western landscapes. Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, he was largely self-taught and left home at the age of thirteen to travel west, where he developed lasting friendships with Native American communities, cowboys, and traders that deeply informed his work. A World War II paratrooper, Damrow spent much of his life in the Southwest, painting from firsthand experience and memory. His richly detailed, nostalgic compositions earned a devoted following, and his works are held in private, corporate, and public collections. Although a serious horse-riding accident in 1968 curtailed his artistic output, Damrow remains recognized as an important twentieth-century interpreter of the American frontier.
