Walter Hunt was a British painter celebrated for his finely detailed depictions of farmyard animals and rural life. The son of genre painter Charles Hunt and brother of noted animal painter Edgar Hunt, he specialized in realistic portrayals of livestock, particularly calves, horses, dogs, and donkeys, rendered with meticulous attention to texture and character. Hunt exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1881 and at other leading London institutions, earning recognition for his technical skill and charming Victorian pastoral scenes. His work Dog in the Manger (1885) entered the Tate collection through the Chantrey Bequest, and his paintings remain highly regarded by collectors of British animal and sporting art.
