Full gilt-ruled and decorated red leather, spine with gilt-lettered and decorated compartments, with patterned fabric endpapers, all edges gilt. and ribbon bookmark; "Bound by J. Winstanley 81 Fountain Str. Manchester" with binder's sticker on verso of front endpapers. 4to; with red and black printed title pages, tissue guards, elaborate initials, in-text illustrations, and complete with (94) plates, many in color, illustrating costumes, stained glass, ornamental items, and much more, and including an additional title page in color in volume I.
Each 11 1/8 x 7 3/4 in.
Sturdy boards with some rubbing to extremities, and light grime, scuffing, and staining; spines darkened; gutter cracking in both volumes occasionally significant revealing some separation of backstrip from text block; interior with expected age and handling wear including some offsetting and toning, and spotting throughout, sometimes heavy, vol. I with light damp staining.
