Arthur Wilhelm Otto Lewin-Funcke (German, 1866-1937), Mother

Early 20th century casting, patinated bronze, signed "Lewin-Funcke" to the terrace side, a lovely tender moment depicting a kneeling mother adoring her baby.

German sculptor and medalist, Arthur Lewin-Funcke, was known for his bronze and stone sculptures depicting the female nude, children, and other figurative groups during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Born in Niedersedlitz near Dresden in 1866, he apprenticed as a carver. Arthur studied at the Art Academy Berlin and in Rome after receiving the Paul-Schultze-Stiftung (Atelier Villa Strohl-Fern) scholarship (circa 1900). He also studied at the Académie Julian, Paris with the French Academic sculptor, Denys Puëch (1854–1942). Arthur opened his own atelier, "Studienatelier für Malerei und Plastik" ("Lewin-Funcke-School") in the Berlin-Charlottenburg where he remained until his death in 1937.

Some light wear to the patina on the upper surfaces.
