Pál Fried was a Hungarian-American painter best known for his portraits, female figures, dancers, and Orientalist subjects. Born in Budapest, he studied at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts before continuing his training in Paris at the Académie Julian under Lucien Simon. Fried traveled extensively in Spain and North Africa before immigrating to the United States following World War II. He later divided his time between New York and Los Angeles, where he became known for portraits of society figures and celebrities, while continuing to paint the ballerinas, nudes, and glamorous figures for which he remains best recognized.
