Mid-Atlantic Classical Carved Mahogany Sideboard

Attributed to Philadelphia, circa 1820, mahogany veneer, poplar and white pine secondary, underside of drawer with pencil inscription "David Provost 1821," applied high pronounced backsplash with book-matched veneers, the case featuring a pull-out drink slide to the right side, two side by side drawers above three central stacked drawers, the lower being a cellarette drawer, flanked by two hinged paneled cabinet doors with flame mahogany veneers, shelved interior, 3/4 carved stiles featuring pineapple and acanthus leaf, paneled sides, molded and vertically veneered base, raised on front carved paw feet, retaining Greenwich, Connecticut antiques dealer label to the posterior.

Purchased in 2009 from Stanley Weiss Collection, Providence, Rhode Island.

Research revealed no known makers with the name David Provost, so the pencil inscription "David Provost 1821" to the underside of the drawer could be an inscription relating to a merchant or purchaser for whom the piece was made. Light genealogical research revealed various David Provosts in the North East during this time period, including revolutionary figures to judicial leaders. Note that "Provost" is also a term used to identify an official, sometimes a chief military official, magistrate, or judge. Some early academic circles used this term for the head of a University.

Later screws to backsplash; right rear top molding trim with one inch missing; top surface with tight shrinkage split; appropriate but later pulls in original holes; right toe missing tip.
