John Anderson Craven (Randolph County, NC, 1824-1859 ), Published Two Gallon Stoneware Jar

Salt glazed stoneware, stamped "J.A.C" to the shoulder, semi-ovoid jar form with flat rim and dual lug handles, featuring salt-spotting and incised banding to the waist.

11 1/2 x 10 x 10 in.

This pot is Illustrated and discussed on page 36 of the text THE CRAVEN FAMILY OF SOUTHERN POTTERS: North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri by Quincy Scarborough.

Scarborough explains that the incised "banding was a common practice of earlier potters, it does not appear in the Craven family until they united with the Fox family, who used this decorative technique rather frequently. This high style jar is typically an eighteenth century form made in the mid-nineteenth century."

Restoration to one handle; opposite side of the rim with glaze flake and 1" area of associated painted repair; underside with branching tight hairline.
