Helen Gapen Oehler was an American painter and educator known for her landscapes, seascapes, and scenes inspired by extensive travel. Born in Ottawa, Illinois, she studied art and education at the University of Illinois before graduating with honors from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She continued her studies in New York, Provincetown, and Paris, and worked with noted American painter George Elmer Browne. Oehler developed a progressive Impressionist style characterized by vigorous brushwork, rich color, and an expressive treatment of light and atmosphere.

Oehler taught and painted in the Midwest before living in Connecticut and New Jersey, where she became active in regional arts organizations and served as director of the Art Council of New Jersey. In the late 1950s she moved to California, becoming part of the Marin County art community before settling near Carmel on the Monterey Peninsula. She exhibited widely, including at the National Academy of Design, Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, and the de Young Museum in San Francisco, and held leadership positions in several national arts organizations.
