Vestie Davis was a self-taught American folk artist best known for his lively, densely populated scenes of New York City landmarks. Born in Baltimore, he moved to New York in 1928 and began painting in 1947, developing a distinctive, colorful style that celebrated familiar urban subjects, particularly Coney Island. His work is held in the collections of the American Folk Art Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Milwaukee Art Museum. Davis was honored with the retrospective exhibition Vestie Davis’s New York at the American Folk Art Museum, which opened in 2009 and continued into 2010.
